Nutrition Tip: Eating on a SIBO Diet

Nutrition Tip: Eating on a SIBO Diet

In general, dietary sugars and fermentable carbohydrates feed the bacteria that is associated with SIBO so a SIBO diet protocol restricts these types of foods.  Your doctor will give you a full list of foods to avoid as part of healing.  Here are some other tips around eating that can also be useful for everyone:

  • Allow your digestive tract to empty.  Wait 4-5 hours between eating and don’t eat before you go to bed. This will help clean out your digestive tract and enhances the healing process.
  • Eat mindfully.  Pause to enjoy the flavors and smells you’re about to enjoy.  Support digestion by chewing your food well. Put your fork down between bites so you won’t be tempted to rush and gulp down your food.
  • Keep a food journal. Your body responds uniquely to foods you eat and foods that bother one person may not be problematic for you.  Note what you’re eating and how you feel so that you can maximize your nutrition options.  Try a mobile app, such as MyFitnessPal or the FODMAP app from Monash University, or just write it down on paper.
  • Try new things!  There is a wonderful world of options available to us in modern dining.  Dietary restrictions are simply a reason to branch out and explore new foods, recipes and cuisines!
