Senate Majority Leader, Stephen Fenberg, Meets the Doctors at Boulder Natural Health!

Last week the doctors at Boulder Natural Health invited Senate majority leader of Colorado, Stephen Fenberg, to our office.  We believe it is important to meet our senators and congress people because they are making decisions on our behalf.  We invited Senator Fenberg to our clinic to educate him about naturopathic medicine, talk to him about our specialties and training, and discuss our individualized approach to health care.

We talked a lot about naturopathic medical training, how we practice, our scope of practice in Colorado, and many other important discussion items. Here is what we discussed regarding our training:

  • NDs and MDs share the same educational foundation. Naturopathic medical students focus on the prevention and treatment of disease in an outpatient setting using methods and substances that support the body’s innate ability to heal. Conventional medical students primarily focus on the treatment of disease using higher force interventions, including pharmaceuticals and surgery, in settings such as a hospital.
  • We share the same classes as MDs in years 1-4 of medical school. We take anatomy, biochemistry, histology, embryology, immunology, microbiology, neuroscience, pathology, pharmacology, philosophy, physical exam skills, physiology, cardiology, dermatology, EENT, gastroenterology, gerontology, gynecology, minor surgery, neurology, oncology, pediatrics, radiology, respiratory, rheumatology, and urology.
  • ND students also take additional coursework in botanical medicine, counseling, homeopathy, hydrotherapy, naturopathic physical medicine, and nutrition.
  • ND students focus on learning and applying modalities that support the body’s innate healing ability to prevent and treat various medical conditions.

4-Years

The length of time the graduate level naturopathic medical program takes after getting an undergraduate degree.

1,200 hours

The minimum hours of clinical training ND students receive.

Thank you to Dr. Ashley Patrice, ND, the legislative chair for the Colorado Association of Naturopathic Doctors, and to our lobbyist, Anne, who both joined us at the event.  Thank you to Shine Restaurant & Potion Bar who catered our event with delicious gluten-free, organic food, and paleo cookies treats!
