Acid reflux occurs when acid comes out of the stomach and back up into the throat. Symptoms of acid reflux can be the classic burning sensation behind the chest or in the throat. It can also present as a sour taste in the mouth, phlegm or mucus in the throat, chronic clearing of the throat, cough, the sensation of a ball in the throat and burping after eating.
GERD
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is a more serious form of acid reflux. In GERD, the reflux occurs chronically and causes damage over time. This condition affects approximately one-third of the population in the U.S. at least once per month. Ten percent of adults experience GERD symptoms daily or weekly. Other side effects of GERD symptoms include tooth enamel decay, gingivitis, halitosis, coughing, wheezing and asthma. Many people often have a hiatal hernia in addition to GERD.
Our Holistic Approach
Often patients come into the office already taking acid lowering medications such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and H2 blockers. These medications further decrease stomach acid production to control symptoms and there are often side effects to long term use of these medications.
Our holistic approach aims to calm inflammation and promote healing while working to understand contributing factors and correct root cause. At Boulder Natural Health, we offer a holistic, whole-body, approach for a more permanent resolution.
