The Healing Power of Winter

Across all traditional healing practices, there is a discussion on the meaning of each season and encouragement to live by the patterns of nature. Each change in season offers its own medicine and provides wisdom for the months ahead.
.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), winter is a time of yin. It is cold, dark, and slow. It is a time to go within and to build and store energy (Qi) for the coming spring. We do this through quiet reflection, adequate rest, and nourishing foods like soups and stews that are warming.
.
The winter solstice represents the longest night of the year and marks the first day of winter. This prompts us to spend time honoring darkness and prepare for the coming light. A common solstice ritual is to reflect upon the gifts and lessons that the year has provided and release what is no longer serving you by writing it on a piece of paper and burning it in a fire.
.
In Cherokee tradition, winter brings the medicine of the North and along with that, cold winds. This symbolizes hardships and discomfort and if one learns to tolerate these, they have gained patience and endurance.
.
The first day of winter is also the beginning of the holiday season for many. Holidays are a time of tradition, joy, celebrations, and community…and sometimes a time that magnifies grief and loneliness. The start of a new calendar year brings hope for freshness, new opportunities, and intentions for the months ahead.
.
When we sit with winter and all that it brings, we are able to let nature guide us. The message of winter is one of honoring the dark, so that we can more deeply appreciate light, building yin to support yang, enduring the medicine of the North so we have strength for growth, and sitting with grief which is often present because we have experienced joy. By making space for these opposites, we enhance the sweetness of life.
.
Winter is medicine. It is a beautiful time for reflection, rest, and for setting intentions. The team at Boulder Natural Health sends our love and best wishes to you this season. May it provide the medicine you need.
