Are You Getting The Nutrients You Need?

in Blog, Food, Health

But I eat a balanced diet, exercise and take a multivitamin…  Many people work hard at improving their health and yet some individuals still have nutrient deficiencies.  How could this be?

1) Absorption (or lack of absorption)

People with digestive issues including gas, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, colitis, IBS, celiac disease and inflammatory bowel disease do not absorb the same amount of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fatty acids from their diet because they have compromised intestinal absorption.

2) Chronic Illness

Vitamin, mineral and antioxidant deficiencies have been shown to suppress the function of the immune system which can contribute to chronic degenerative disease processes such as arthritis, cancer, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis and fibromyalgia among others.

3) Aging

The nutrient status we have at age 30 is different from the nutrient status we have at age 70.  As we age our stomach acid decreases, our capacity to absorb nutrients is lowered and our nutritional requirements increase.

4) Lifestyle

Various factors in our lifestyle can affect our nutrient status and our nutritional requirements.  Excessive physical activity, prescription drugs, smoking, alcohol consumption, and sedentary habits all impact our nutrient demands.

5) Biochemical Individuality

Based on our individual genetics, every person has different metabolic requirements.

Below is a list of health conditions associated with specific nutrient deficiencies.
